Gianluca Magnani, ESF umpire from Italy, was selected as the plate umpire in the championship final of the recently concluded Women's World Championship in Beijing, China. The game between the USA and Japan, won by the USA by a score of 3-0, was played at the site of the 2008 Olympic softball competition to be held in Beijing. Gianluca's selection from the staff of 20 umpires appointed to the championship was in recognition of his outstanding work during the 10-day competition. Video of the game is available for viewing here.

The ESF, in cooperation with Baseball-Softball UK, has scheduled a certification clinic for slow pitch umpires to be conducted in Canterbury (UK) during the weekend of June 15-18.

At the IOC meeting prior to the opening of the Winter Games in Torino this week, softball was once again denied an opportunity to regain its place on the Summer program, losing a vote to reconsider last year's Singapore decision by a tally of 47 opposed, 43 in favor. A truly sad moment for our sport...

Sit.: R1, R2.
The batter hits a flyball to short leftfield. F6 moves back and dives for the ball. However, when he hits the ground the ball rolls out of his glove. F7 grabs the ball and throws it to 3B. The BR, seeing this, passes R1 who stayed at 1B because of the flyball. F5 catches the ball and tags 3B (R2 stays surprised on 2B) and then throws to F4 who tags 2B. What is your decision?
